What is a good starting point??
Is it best to start with the smaller or larger owed amounts when trying to pay on things that's on my credit to help my score?

Both ways will help about the same for your score.  Unless you have a card that has a high percentage usage (+30%), then getting that down to under 30 can help the score.  

The typical two thoughts on paying of credit cards are, pay the most to the highest INTEREST charging card, and paying of the lowest balance.  The first does save some money in the long run, but the second can be a huge moral booster to actually seeing the debt go away therefore helps keep you on track.
