Why file bankruptcy?

Filing bankruptcy should be the ultimate last resort and only if you would have a lot to lose without doing a bankruptcy.  Besides, a bankruptcy messes up your credit rating for 10 years (or longer).  Some people think a bankruptcy would eliminate the negative remarks on their credit score but it won't. Those remarks remain for about 7 years.

So think hard before filing bankruptcy.  If you decide to do so, consult with a bankruptcy attorney because there are a lot of legal issues to consider.  And the initial consultation usually is free.

I did a Chapter 13 years ago before I knew better and really wish I hadn't done so.
