As long as you don't close your credit cards, then it will really help. Lowering your utilization rate on cards is a great way to increase your credit scores. As far as paying off the collections do your best to get "pay for delete agreements" prior to paying them, because simply getting the collections marked as paid does little to help your scores if the collections still remain, it is always best to attempt to get them removed. Do some research on "pay for delete agreements" as it will be helpful for you to know.
