Bankruptcy does not clear your credit, unless you consider having to rebuild totally (as in "back to square one") clearing your credit.  Unpaid regular bills (credit cards, consumer loan, medical expenses, etc) will disappear after 7 years of non payment.  That will put some negative remarks on your record for a short while, but a bankruptcy totals your credit for ten years.  And, depending on your state, there is a statute of limitations for collecting a debt and that is something to look up and keep in mind.  But bankruptcy is the ultimate last resort, and not a very good one, at that.
