Single over-limit event - short or long term consequences?
I accidentally went over my limit on a card by $72 and my score dropped 56 points. Is this a quick hit until I go under my limit or will this hurt me for awhile?

Your score took the hit as you maxed out your utilzation.   This is a short term consequence as long as you get that utilzation back under control.

So, you think it's a utilization hit and not an extra hit for going over limit?  That would be great if that's the case.
