Depends on the account.  If it is credit cards, go ahead and pay them off (saves on interest) but keep them active since the age of accounts is one of the many factors in calculating a credit score.  Long term loans like car loans you might want to just keep paying as usual so that the age factor and history of good payments are considerations in the credit score.  Once the loan is paid off, it may figure into your score for as long as 10 years, then it's gone.
