Paying off accounts does not remove them from your credit report. Most negative items will remain on your credit reports for seven years from the time of the negative. Most positive accounts will remain for at least ten years. Never try to remove accounts that were closed in good standing. For any negative accounts that you paid off, write the creditor or debt collector a "goodwill letter" begging for removal of the negative account from your reports. Do some thorough reading on credit, your future depends on it.
