It is AVERAGE age of credit. So if you have 5 accounts that are 1,2,4,8,9 years old the you add and divide by the number of accounts (1+2+4+8+9 = 24)(24/5= 4.8) or less than 5 years years average age of credit.  everytime you add a new account it will lower your average age of credit.  Please keep in mind that some models use average age of open credit, and some include closed accounts.
