You can recover from a late payment by making all future payments in a timely manner.  Only time will erase the late payment reported.   Its not what you did that one time, its how you recovered from the incident and how you performed after.  Many creditors will look to the most recent year or two payments and may not look to items older than that, while others look at complete payment history over 7 years.  The longer it appears on your record the less of an impact it will have.
