As long as you don't default on the debt, keeping the account current (no late or missed payments) will help improve your score. If you let it go into collections that's going to hurt your score badly. Even though the account is closed, you still owe the credit card company. As long as you make payments, the CC company will report on time payments and your balance will decrease. Depending on how goood/bad your score is now, your credit score will gradually improve.
