ive been sent to collections for things that are not mine but my ss# was used....identity theft??

If you haven't already, go to annualcreditreport.com and get copies of all three credit reports, which you will look over very carefully and file disputes preferably in writing and keep a copy of all related correspondence for your records until this matter is completely cleared up.

Too many people think they have to carry their Social Security card with them at all times.  I hope you are not one of them.  You only need to show a Social Security card a few times in your life, so it is safer to keep the card in your safety deposit box or a small at-home portable safe.  That number is a gold mine to any ID thief and it's best to make it extremely difficult for someone else to get it.
