There is the possibility (no guarantees) of negotiating a "pay for delete" arrangement with the collection agency.  Such negotiations should be in writing so there is proof of what each party said in event of a disagreement. But, if it is your debt, you shoud be paying.  If it is not your debt but is showing on your credit report, you should be disputing it.

You can wait it out.  It has to fall off your report 7 & 1/2 years from date it went delinquent.
