Is it better to make payment on bad debt rather than to just pay them off?

If you can afford to pay off the account with one payment, that would be better for a couple reasons.  1. It allows you the ability to negotiate with the collector/creditor and get them to agree IN WRITING that they will remove the account from your credit report if you pay if off in full with one payment.  2.  If the creditors do not agree to this, then at least it will be on report for a slightly shorter amount of time - 7 & 1/2 years from the date it is paid off.  So sooner paid, sooner it will drop off.

If these debts are already near 7 & 1/2 years old, I'd probably just leave them alone and wait for them to fall off, but that's just me.  Hope this helps!
