Chapter 13 bankruptcy is also referred to as "The Wage Earner's Repayment Plan." While it is better than a Chapter 7, it is still a matter of public record and does hurt your credit for 7 years.  But, you were already having financial problems which is why you filed under Chapter 13. Of the two, a Chapter 13 is the better one because you are making debt repayments, thought not under the terms you and your creditors agreed to initially.  Your goal for the future would best be to use credit wisely (re read the articles on this site), pay credit cards in full every month and keep utilization no higher than 10%.
