If you cancel a card that has a balance but you keep it in good standing how does this affect score

 Don't they require you to pay off the balance before you can cancel it? Or maybe I read your post wrong?

Closing cards usually results in a score DECREASE. As already said, you will have to pay it off before you can close it in good standing, but I would avoid closing it if you are concerned about your scores unless you have a bunch of other cards.
