I would like to close some credit cards that have a zero balance - will that hurt my credit score?

It probably would hurt your credit, it will mainly depend on how many accounts that you have and the ages of the accounts you plan to close. I would strongly advise that you STOP! Don't do anything until you have done extensive reading on the effects of closing accounts. If you do ever decide to proceed with closing cards, make sure that you only do one at a time, waiting a month or two after closing each one to see what the effects will be. In general, closing accounts ALWAYS harms your credit.
