I was always told after 7 years things would drop off your credit report. How do you get them remove

It depends on what type of account that it was and what the status of it was when it was closed. For most negative information it will be removed in seven years, but federal loans and such do not apply to that. If an account was closed in good standing it will remain for ten years or more. NEVER try to remove accounts that were closed in good standing. Also do thorough reading about credit before you take any action with your credit. If you start trying to tweek your credit when you don't know what you are doing, you can cause damage.
