I think i need to just wait the four to five years for the bad stuff to go away on my report ?

Waiting is unproductive.  Sure, there may be bad things on the credit report from past mistakes, but you can build a good record right now by making on-time payments for all accounts.  That can outweigh the bad things a lot faster.

You did get all 3 credit reports to make sure the bad things on there were really your accounts, didn't you?  If not, do so right away.  It's not unusual for there to be errors on credit reports, but it is your duty to make sure what is being reported is yours and doesn't belong to someone else.
