If it is an IRS tax lien, go to their website and download Form 12277 Application for Withdrawal of Filed Form 668(Y), Notice of Federal Tax Lien.  Complete that form, make copy for yourself, and mail it to the IRS.  They'll send you back a Withdrawal of Filed Notice of Federal Tax Lien After Release and you mail that to all three credit bureaus with a letter asking them to remove the lien from your files.  If it is a state tax lien, then send letters to the bureaus and send them proof that it has been released or at least proof that you paid it.  Ask them to remove it (you can try writing to the State as well).  Takes a little time, but it will come off.  Best of luck!
