Most negative information will stay on your reports for 7 years from the negative action or 7 years from the time that the account became delinquent. By law, most negative information has to be removed at 7 1/2 years (charge offs, collections). If you find that the negative account has been in negative status for over 7 years you would want to dispute that account directly with the credit bureaus as "too old to report".

Keep in mind that the 7 years does not start when an original account was opened, the 7 years starts when the original account became delinquent. The start date for the 7 years is known as the Date Of First Delinquency (dofd)
