The account was opened

even if you did not activate the card. So it is on your Credit report.

Opening and imediately closing them will hurt your score significantly, and will make new creditors think twice before opening any new accounts.  It cost the creditor around $250. in time and fees to open an account. So they loose money if you do that.

SO NEVER OPEN ACCOUNTS YOU DO NOT INTEND TO USE. plus closing an account lowers your available credit so you score will take a hit as well.

Good luck
