A high limit is helpful in two ways.  First, it gives you a little extra wiggle room in true emergencies where you only option may be credit.  Second, it helps keep your debt to credit ratio (the balance you carry vs. your total credit limit) low which helps out your credit score.  Of course, you don't have to have high limits to have a low debt to credit ratio, but the lower your limit, the easier it is to increase that ratio quickly.
