I am not sure what this amount is for since you didn't say, but if it is for an old debt you want to attempt to get a "pay for delete agreement" prior to paying it. You should do some research on this, basically it is you getting them to agree to remove the account in exchange for you paying it. Simply paying a debt and only getting it marked as paid when already in a negative status usually does little to help your scores.
