Depends on the type of bankruptcy. A Chapter 7 will usually want the money up-front (and it's usually a lot). A Chapter 13 bankruptcy usually means you don't have to pay anything directly, since they can take it out of your monthly trustee payments. In my case, I had a Ch. 13 bankruptcy and paid the lowyer nothing directly, sicne they took it out of my monthly payment plan.

Most bankruptcy lawyers offer a free consulation though, so check them out and ask them during that consulation - they'll usually tell you up front what they charge, and which type of bankruptcy is right for you (or even if it's necessary in your case).
