As is covered in the articles here, it depends on the negative.  Most credit cards and consumer bills are gone after 7 years, as is a Chapter 13 bankruptcy.  Chapter 7 bankruptcies remain for ten years as do most judgements.  Unpaid taxes and unpaid sudent loans can be there forever.  This topic is well covered in the articles here which are easily understood.  Please take the time to read them.
