how many times can they pull your credit for a car loan
One dealership made 11 hard inquiries on my credit report why would they do that?

Yes, perfectly legal. Dealerships often deal with many different lenders and that is why you ended up with multiple inquiries. The good news is, even though all of the inquiries will be visible on your reports they will only be scored as one inquiry (auto, mortgage, student loans get this special scoring treatment when the loans are applied for within a short time period). Also, the inquiries only remain for 2 years on your reports. Keep in mind, that it is a good thing that dealerships work with many lenders.
