It is not the number of credit cards, but the amount of credit and how well you handle your credit accounts.  You need a usage percentage of ten or under and it is best to pay all accounts in full every month.  Keep all accounts active and one way to do thaty is assign a regularly recurring account to a credit card.  Such things as monthly auto insurance, regular medicines or vitamins, cellphone, etc.  These are accounts you normally write a check for but have them go to a card, then pay that card every month.  Read the articles here on building your credit for additional information.  Worked for me.
