Two or three cards is sufficient for building credit. As far as using one card to pay off another you need to do some reading on "balance transfers". Read all of the fine print about balance transfers as there are fees and it can affect how the card works.

No, you cannot use one credit card to pay off another. This practice was stopped years ago. The only way is to use a convenience check offered by the credit card company and fees are involved. Balance transfer cards offer a zero % term with fees, if you have an excellent credit score.
