How long will it take to improve my credit score if I paid off both credit cards

Short answer is after you have acquired more cards making more credit available to you.  The more credit yoiu have available, the -higher your score.

Paying off cards helps reduce the amount of interest you pay.  Having a lower utilization (<30% is usually the metric thrown out) is what you should strive for that will improve your credit.  Make sure you are using the accounts (even if just a little) to keep them reporting to the credit bureaus as well.
