Credit scores are built by wise use of and an increased amount of credit, as is explained very clealy in the articles on this site.  When you close an account, you remove whatever that card's credit limit was from the total, and lower your credit score.

Usually within a month or so, but be warned, the results will probably not be favorable since you closed the accounts.
