how long does a bad mark stay on your credit report?
in 2007 I paid 2 bills late but they still show on my report. The bills were paid off in full and closed in 2010

Hi jmramrmrm! There are exceptions and it does depend on the type of negative mark, but below are the general guidelines. Hope this helps!

  • Late Payments: 7 years
  • Bankruptcy: 7 years for completed Chapter 13 bankruptcy and 10 years for Chapter 7 bankruptcy
  • Foreclosures: 7 years
  • Collections: About 7 years, depending on the age of the debt being collected. Also depends on whether your debt was sold to another party, which could reset the timing to the beginning (this is particularly awful)
