How long before closed accounts are off record

They remain on your credit report for 7 years, though can stay on over ten years if you have an excellent payment record.  You don't want accounts to be closed, as is explained in the credit articles here.

Most accounts closed in good standing will remain for a period of ten years or more. Most negative accounts are removed in seven years, there is also such a thing as "Early Exclusion" where you can sometimes get them removed a little earlier than the seven year mark. NEVER try to remove accounts that were closed in good standing as doing so would damage your credit profile.
