Unfortunately YOU can’t remove items from your credit report.  Credit reporting bureaus have a responsibility to show reported items on your credit report as reported by the reporting company unless proven untrue or inaccurate.  But they do not do any fact checking in that process unless you request they investigate the item in writing.

So you can request an investigation into items that are reported incorrectly or untrue.  If you file a dispute with the credit bureaus in writing, they will research the item for 30 days (45 days if you file your dispute online) and they will adjust your report should the investigation proves the item is incorrect or untrue.  With that said, you should understand that the credit bureaus are NOT your friend, and they will likely tell you the information proves to be true and leave it on your report unless you provide proof of the inaccuracy.  Understand that the credit bureaus will NOT provide you a copy of any proof of what they discover in their investigation either.

As a result, better results usually come from the reporting company themselves, since they MUST provide you proof of the validation once you request it in writing.  So you may want to start your process of dispute by asking the reporting company to first provide details and proof of the inaccuracy and tell them you are disputing the item.  They are then required to file an immediate remark to the credit bureaus telling people that read your report that the item is being disputed by you and they must provide valid proof of the inaccuracy or request it to be removed altogether.  Notice that some states give an indefinite amount of time for reporting companies to investigate the issue unless you specifically state a time frame for a response in your letter of dispute.  So be sure to request they reply in 30 days from receipt of your letter.  Should the company fail to provide valid proof of the inaccuracy in that time frame and they still refuse to request the removal or correction of the item, you can use their response to your dispute letter as valid proof to give the credit bureaus in your dispute with them.

However if the items prove to be true an accurate, you will simply have to live with the item on your credit report.  The item will remain as part of your credit report and be calculated into your score for up to 7 years, or in the case of legal items like judgements or student loans up to 10 years.  If the items do not fall off your report in that time, you can use the time frame as a valid reason to request an investigation and request the item be removed.

If it is wrong information, file disputes on it with the credit bureau reporting it. Otherwise, the information remains for 7 years and drops off because it is part of your credit history.
