How do I know when derogatory information should be off my report
some of the accounts listed as derogatory are over 10 years old

Date the Derog was posted

They should fall off 7 years after the date they were posted.  If you had an account for a few years before the derog was posted, that would be why the account is older but the derogs still show up.  If you believe that they shouldn't be there at all, you can file a dispute with the CRA on thier website or write a "Vaidation letter" (google it for a template)  and mail it to the CRA asking for it to be removed. They will verify dates etc to see if the info is accurate. If the info is not accurate it will be removed.
