Late payments remain on your credit reports for 7 years and will continue to do damage, although the damage is not as severe as the negative ages.

The cards are closed because you apparently weren't making payments properly so the company is stopping you from making any additional charges.  But the balance is still owed and remains payable, so late payments and interest charges will keep adding up until you get the account paid off.  Maybe you are one of those people who should not even have a credit card.
