It is going to take time and effort.  Start by getting a secured credit card.  Make all payments on time.  Try to use no more than 20% of the available credit so you can pay it in full when the bill comes in.

When they say "bankruptcy gives you a fresh start" they mean you start building your credit all over again.  Takes time and effort, but worth it.
