how can I go about making sure what I paid in full is taken off my credit report

You have to negotiate that in writing with the creditor before you pay it off.  By law, they are allowed to report an account for 7 & 1/2 years from the date it is paid off.

If it's good history, don't remove.

Just because an account is paid in full doesn't mean it should be removed.  A good payment history is essential to getting granted additional credit, so you DO NOT want the good stuff removed before  they will naturally drop off.
