That's the first thing to find out.  Since imperfect humans input the data that is on our credit reports, mistakes are bound to happen.  Go to annualcreditreport.com and get copies of all three credit reports.  Look them over very carefully and file a dispute on each wrong item (not your account, wrong information, etc) with the credit bureau reporting same.  They have to investigate and either verify or delete that item.  Make sure you check your credit reports once a year to assure only the correct information is being reported.

The address of the collector will be on your credit report, as will a notation at the bottom of each entry such as "charged off and the date", " sold or transferred and the date," " due to fall off report and the date."  Those are key bits to help decide payment or let it fall off.  Understanding the statute of limitations for collections in your state is important, too.  While the Fair Credit Reporting Act requires all credit transactions be reported for 7 years (no removing true account information), The state statute of limitationsdetermines how long the account can be collectable, which is shorter than 7 years in most. Search this information out on those accounts that are really yours.

The negative remark on collections has to stay on your report for 7 years from "date of last activity" (payment) on accounts that are yours, and that is unchangable.
