Just starting to care

So I make about 205900 a year and never gave a crap about my credit.  Now I am finding it fun to take care of and try to get over 800.  So I take a look and my first car loan from when I was 18 which is over 17 years ago is reporting.  I was in the navy and at that point in time a e2 was paid around 600 every 2 weeks and of course the recruiter never said hey you will make less in the navy than working at Kmart.  So I struggled to pay and missed payment etc so it looks bad.  How do I fix this.  I read some things but do I really have to pull a credit report just to fix it or can I call someone?  Thanks ck members.
