I've already sent out for a free credit report. What steps do I take from there?

Once you get your report, send letters to all three bureaus (and creditors/collectors) and dispute any errors.  They have 30 days to respond.  You need to send them your proof of ID, otherwise they'll blow you off and send you a letter stating they think someone is trying to steal your identity.  Send them something with your name and current address (utility bill, driver's license) and a copy of your SS card or some other form of ID.  Don't worry, they already have this info, you're not giving anything away by providing it to them.  Be persistent but polite.  Best of luck!
