NO, They stop taking them away.

Actually you don't get credit for paying it off, but they stop dinging you for not having paid it.  

The longer in the past, the less effect it will have on your scores. But in general, the sooner you pay it off the faster you can fix your scores.   

There are many factors to consider when it comes to actually paying off debt,  sometimes you can get them removed with out having to pay them,  some times its better to leave them untouched and let them fall off your report.
