Do "prequalified" offers still hit your credit as a hard inquiry if you apply?
I got an offer from American Express in the mail and was curious to know if that meant I was "prequalified"

It means that they bought a list

of potential customers that met their criteria when the list was made.  They Did not check your credit directly, They did not do a hard inquiry.  If you accept the offer, they will then do a hard inquiry to your credit. Just because your were "Pre-Qualified" does not guarantee that they will give you a card, It all depends on your credit report/score on the day that they actually get your applicatrion, since most peoples credit reports change on a daily/weekly basis, They will Double check your info.
