just having it won't make it better

A good score is based on the amount of available credit your have...  e.g. the total amount that you can charge to a credit card plus the amounts of credit for auto, personal loans and mortgages. thats 35% of your score.  Versus the utilization (how much you actually owe)  Another 35% is based on your payment history, Making payments on time...  

Credit cards do help your score if they are managed propelry and paid on time.  Just remember that credit cards are ONLY tools so you need not carry cash.  Know how you are going to pay for each purchase you make using a credit card, and you'll never have problems with them.  Credit cards can be a credit savior or your credits worst nightmare, It's how you use them...
