Desputing items on credit report. Does this help my credit once the items are removed?

It certainly can.

The items you dispute will be items that are not yours but are showing on your report.  You want those GONE, especially if they are having a bad effect on your credit score.  You cannot, however, dispute items that ARE yours, but that don't reflect well, such as late  payments or collections.  If those things actually happened to you, they are part of your credit history and have to stay for up to 7 years as required by the Fair Credit Reporting Act (federal regulation).
