It depends on how old the debt is. Do some reading to find out if you are still legally on the hook for the debt and how long it will stay on your credit reports. "Statute of Limitations" in your state to be sued for medical debt, credit reporting time period of seven years, "pay for delete agreements", paying collections, etc. should all be read about.

I forgot to add, do some reading on how to build credit too and get started right away as it takes time. After extensive reading about credit, a Secured credit card that reports to all three credit bureaus is a start.
