How old is old?

You need to check the three credit reports to see when the date of delinquency on a debt began.  Then check the statute of limitations on collections to see what the time limit is for your state, since they vary.  If the SOL has expired, then you can send the debt collector a "Cease and Desist" letter stating that the SOL had expired.

But, if it has not expired, you may want to arrange a "Pay for Delete" arrangement and this negotiation must be via 'snail mail' and you need to keep copies of the letters until after the agreement is made and payment completed.  These topics are covered in the articles here and on several other credit related sites.  Please read the information for your benefit.
