Forget the "credit repair" companies because (1) you can do this yourself if you are willing to follow sound advice and make the needed changes and (2) many of these advertised companies charge exorbitant fees and some companies are totally unethical. Do a Google search for Dave Ramsey's advice and try his "Baby Steps" method to get things back on track. He has been well spoken of by many people.

I agree with jwsister but have also heard dave ramsey's advice of avoiding credit will get you in trouble when you actually need credit for like a mortgage or something.  Im not familiar with his program myself but its what Ive heard on other credit boards.
