Collection agency removed item-if I pay original creditor (owner), can the collection agency repost?
A collection agency removed an item from my reports (I checked) and sent it back to the original creditor for validation. I called the original creditor and they said they still own it and the agency was working on behalf of them.

If I quickly pay the original creditor while the item is off of my report, can the original creditor or agency then just repost it and put "paid" or anything?

They can report it as collection/paid, but if you speak with them, tell them your intentions to pay and then do so promptly, generally they will not bother to report it again at all. You can also flat out ask them (politely) that if you were to pay in full by xxx date if they will not report it again. Never hurts to ask. :)

Thanks!  I will try that route with them and hopefully it works!  I can pay today, so hopefully that will help.

If they say no and end up reporting it after I have paid, could I dispute it as not being reported at the time of pay?

It wouldn't let me reply above. Yes, you can try to dispute at that point, as it wasn't reporting with any agency at time of payment you "should" win in a challenge. I say should because it's all guessing when it comes to what agencies will and will not delete.

A better option may be to ask them about a pay for delete. You can ask them to either mail, fax, or email you a letter stating they will delete from reports for full payment. Technically you don't need this since it's not currently reporting, but if you had that and they later tried to tag it back on your reports, providing a copy of their letter to CRA's would guarantee a removal.

Hope that helps! Good luck!
