collection agency allowed to report a late payment on a collection that hasnt been touched in years?
I have a collection with Verizon Wireless that has been marked closed/derogatory/charge off for about 3 years. I have not made any contact with them since then. Just recently, I applied for a mortgage. I was unable to get approved because apparently Verizon, or the collection agency, has been reporting late payments the past 3 months. My question is, are they allowed to randomly start reporting late payments? I have not made a payment plan with them at all. I was told by my mortgage lender that since it has been marked closed for a number of years, that they should not be able to report any new activities. Especially since I have not made any payment plans with them. Please Help!

If they are reporting late payments for the current months and not from long ago, then they are making a mistake. They are allowed to report the late payments from back when they happened, but they can't report a late payment for last month if the account has been closed for years. If this is the case, you need to contact a consumer law attorney that practices in your state and go from there.
