Calling is not a good idea because neither of you have proof of what the other said when you do phone calls.  Writing, while it takes a bit onger, provided concrete evidence of what each said.  E-mails may also help as long as you retain copies for proof.

Do the needed studying on this before proceeding. You don't want to proceed with this if you do not have a very good understanding on how to deal with collection accounts. You really want to try to negotiate a "pay for delete agreement" if possible. If you wish to try to settle the accounts for less, do you know where you stand? Is the time frame (statute of limitations) expired on these debts? If not, you won't have as much leverage. Have you studied the FDCPA (fair debt collection practices act) to make sure that the debt collectors are not violating the law? Being that you don't even know how to contact the debt collectors, I do not believe that you are ready to tackle this yet, please, for your sake, spend some time reading about all of this and if you have more questions, ask and we will try to help.
